Landscaping in Florida
Educational Moment: the term 'Florida-friendly' does not mean native. According to the Adopting a Florida-friendly Landscape publication by UF/IFAS, "a Florida-Friendly yard is an environmentally sound yard that conserves and protects Florida’s waterways, soil, wildlife, and energy." Unfortunately, the term Florida-friendly is often misused by some garden departments, stores, and landscapers to sell you invasive exotic plants like Lantana camera, Mexican petunia, oyster plant, and many others. Wretched! Invasive exotics are devastating to our natural areas, including our waterways, soils and wildlife, which rely on our native plants' survival. Not very friendly, we'd say! So, buyer beware. Non-native plants can be okay here and there, although they usually aren't as beneficial to our wildlife or environment as our native plants are.

Instead of non-native plants, consider supporting one of your local nurseries that carry native plants and purchase your plants there. Wherever you go, just make sure the plants you are choosing as Florida-friendly are actually friendly to Florida, and not just friendly to someone else's pocketbook.

  • "How Do States Estimate Their Wolf Populations?" International Wolf Center, 2016. Link
Accurate population numbers are essential to effective wildlife management—but when the animals in question are freeroaming, low-density inhabitants of wild spaces, getting those numbers is not easy. In part one of a two-part series, Thiel and Boyd explain the methods used to collect population data on wolves, and how they vary with location, terrain and available technology.
